Endogenous Separations, Wage Rigidities, and Unemployment Volatility

چکیده

We show that in microdata, as well a search and matching model with flexible wages for new hires, wage rigidities of incumbent workers have substantial effects on separations unemployment volatility. Allowing an empirically relevant degree drives volatility the vacancies tightness to data. Thus, rigidity newly hired is not sufficient statistic determining effect macroeconomic outcomes. This finding affects interpretation large empirical literature rigidities. (JEL E24, J23, J31, J41, J63)

Endogenous Separations, Wage Rigidities and Employment Volatility

We show that in micro data, as well as in a search and matching model with endogenous separations and rigid wages, separations and hence employment volatility are non-neutral to wage rigidities of incumbent workers. In contrast to when all wages are flexible, the standard deviation of unemployment in a model with rigid wages for incumbent workers (only) matches the standard deviation in the dat...

The Unemployment Volatility Puzzle: Is Wage Stickiness the Answer?

I study the cyclical behavior of an equilibrium search model with endogenous job creation and destruction and extract from it a wage equation that can be compared with the econometric evidence. Job creation in the model is influenced by wages in new matches. I summarize microeconometric evidence on wages in new matches and show that the key model elasticities are consistent with the evidence. T...

The Rise and Fall of Swiss Unemployment Relative Demand Shocks, Wage Rigidities and Temporary Immigrants

Switzerland, traditionally a ‘zero unemployment’ economy, has seen an unprecedented rise in joblessness in the 1990s although unemployment fell again to a rather low level after 1997. This paper tests whether Switzerland experienced a negative relative net demand shock against the low skilled (like the US) during this period. It turns out that only workers with an educational level below appren...

Labor-market Volatility in Matching Models with Endogenous Separations∗

The business-cycle behavior of a matching model with endogenous separations is studied in this paper. We show that whether aggregate productivity shocks have a larger effect on the vacancy–unemployment ratio than in a model with exogenous separations depends on whether worker productivity stochastically increases with tenure. The difference in the response is quantitatively small, however. We a...

Wage Rigidities in Western Germany ?

This paper investigates whether and in what sense the west German wage structure has been ‘rigid’ in the 1990s. To test the hypothesis that a rigid wage structure has been responsible for rising low-skilled unemployment, I propose a methodology which makes less restrictive identifying assumptions than some previous related work. I find that the relative stability of educational wage premia was ...
